Now more than ever, people need the physical and mental benefits of exercise to boost the immune system, help alleviate stress, and facilitate a restful night’s sleep. Gyms are still a great place to exercise, even during the pandemic, assuming they implement the proper safety protocols.
Fitness facilities are in a unique position to fully support contact tracing by requiring reservations, which also controls capacity and maintains social distancing. Make sure your gym of choice has all equipment and workout stations spaced out at least 10 feet apart. While Phase 3 guidelines also require gyms to deny entry to anyone with a body temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher, I recommend lowering the threshold to 99.8 degrees to account for low-grade fevers and early stage symptoms.
Protective face masks are the most critical component to everyone’s safety during this pandemic. Choose a comfortable face mask that fully covers your nose and mouth and wear it whenever you leave home. The gym is no exception, so I recommend choosing a gym that requires everyone to wear a face mask at all times unless the individual has a qualified medical condition.
Ask your gym for a full list of all safety protocols to make sure they have a responsible plan in place. Most gyms now have this listed right on the homepage of their website. Make sure your gym consistently follows, monitors, and enforces all stated safety procedures. If you’re not comfortable with what you experience at your gym, look for another gym with a more advanced plan.
Keep exercising! Your body and mind will thank you for it in the long run. Embrace the gym, but pick one that clearly makes your safety their top priority.
