Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Labor published new regulations for white-collar exemptions to the federal overtime wage law, known as the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). These new regulations would require many employers to either raise salary levels or start paying overtime for certain employees. The regulations were scheduled to go into effect on December 1, 2016. However, a federal court in Texas has issued a preliminary injunction (i.e. a temporary court order) forbidding the implementation of the new regulations until the court can fully hear the case. What does this mean for businesses?

Thanksgiving comes with its own unique history, traditional food fare, autumn colors and family and friendship 'round the table and throughout the house. Of the more than a dozen claims to the first Thanksgiving, two occur in Virginia, one in Texas, and the most well-known in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where some 50 pilgrims and about 90 Indians dined in thankfulness, perhaps for the peace they were enjoying as much as the meal. To my fellow Chamber members and people of the Arlington business community, I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to join me and the Chamber for the 93rd Annual Arlington Business Gala. It will be held on January 28, 2017 at the Ritz Carlton, Pentagon City. Our Gala has been named “Arlington’s Best Night Out” for a reason - it is an absolute blast. This year marks my 14th year of attendance, as well as my third consecutive year of being the Chair of Gala Committee. I am incredibly proud of our success last year as the first Gala to sell out in over 20 years, with over 300 attendees! It is my goal to do it again this year. By Doug Taylor, Bean, Kinney & Korman
