The Virginia Association of Destination Marketing Organizations (VADMO) awarded the Arlington Convention and Visitors Service a 2017 Virgo Award for Destination Event of the Year on Monday in Charlottesville. Arlington was recognized for its June 2017 Monumental Views IPW Travel Trade Reception, which showcased Arlington to international travel trade and media during the U.S. Travel Association’s IPW 2017 event in Washington, D.C.
Held in partnership with the Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID), JBG SMITH, and Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, Arlington’s Monumental Views reception met three objectives: First, it demonstrated to international tour operators and journalists Arlington’s convenience, value, scenic views and amenities in the heart of the nation’s capital. Second, the event previewed a major “coming attraction” for Arlington and the region, the Observation Deck at CEB Tower. And third, it brought together Virginia and capital region tourism partners at a Virginia-based IPW event.
More than 140 people attended the reception, which featured local food, music, exhibitors and photographic displays. More than 60 IPW buyers and media represented key international markets for Arlington and the capital region, including Canada, China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and more. Capital Region USA (CRUSA) research shows that overseas visitors stay longer and spend more money than those from within the U.S. In 2016, 2.5 million overseas travelers visited the capital region, spending an estimated $5.4 billion.
