All new members are given an Ambassador to the Chamber when they first join. Our Ambassador Committee looks to reach out to new members in their first year, serving as an additional resource as long time Chamber members. Ambassadors serve as a trusted voice to new members on how to maximize the Chamber membership, based on the objectives of the new member, and also look to greet new members at upcoming Chamber events.
To get to know your Ambassadors better, we present Sarah DeVoe, CPA and Partner at Burdette Smith and Bish, LLC.
I am a CPA and Partner at Burdette Smith & Bish, LLC.
What are some of the previous jobs or positions that you’ve held?
I've been working at Burdette Smith & Bish for seven years now. I am a certified public accountant who's been working in the field for the past 16 years. Something that surprises people is that before my career as a CPA, I worked as a staff instructor for the Universal Cheerleaders Association traveling the northeast region teaching cheerleading camps.
How long have you been a member of the Chamber?
I have been a member of the Chamber for nine years, since 2010.
What is your favorite part of being a Chamber Ambassador?
I love serving as a connector for the new Chamber members at events by introducing them to other members. I also enjoy the Chamber Ambassador meetings, which are collaborative and a lot of fun.
How else are you involved with the Arlington community?
I am fortunate to have the opportunity to visit and do business with many Chamber members because I live in Arlington County. I serve on the Board of Directors of Doorways for Women and Families, which is a Chamber member. Doorways is a great local organization that creates pathways out of homelessness, domestic violence, and sexual assault leading to safe and empowered lives.
What do you hope to accomplish as a Chamber Ambassador?
I want to help new members find where they fit in within the Chamber and help them get the best possible experience from their membership. I'd like them to share in the same great experience I've had with the Chamber, by assisting new members in finding value and making new friendships as I have.
What do you think makes someone a good Ambassador?
I think people who are outgoing, friendly, and genuinely interested in getting to know other people make great Ambassadors.
What events do you participate in as a Chamber Ambassador?
I try to attend most of the Business After Business events and also a few Breakfast Connection events throughout the year. My favorite annual Chamber events to attend are Cards & Clubs and the State of the County & Public Safety Awards.
How has being a Chamber Ambassador impacted you?
Serving as a Chamber Ambassador has given me the opportunity to meet many interesting people, and I've learned a lot more about the Arlington community through my involvement with different Chamber events and committees.
Why did you decide to become a Chamber Ambassador?
When I first joined the Chamber, I appreciated having an Ambassador reach out to me and talk with me at events, so I wanted to pay that forward. I also think the Ambassador group is made up of some wonderful, caring, and friendly people who I wanted to get to know better.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy reading, traveling, and shopping in my free time. One thing I love about Arlington County is that it has a great library system. In the past two in a half years, I've borrowed and read about 70 books!
