SUBJECT: Please support the Amazon performance agreement
Arlington County Board
2100 Clarendon Boulevard
Suite 300
Arlington, VA 22201
Dear Chair Dorsey,
As a member of the business community in [Crystal City, Pentagon City, Potomac Yard-Arlington, Aurora Highlands, Arlington Ridge, etc.], I am writing to encourage the Arlington County Board to approve the County’s performance agreement with Amazon for their new headquarters. Approving this agreement is a powerful statement that Arlington is open for business and supports business growth. It is a positive step towards diversification of Arlington’s business sector.
Since 2000, the Crystal City area has lost more than 24,000 jobs due to federal policy changes, demonstrating that the area cannot rely solely on the federal government to support our economic interests. Amazon’s headquarters will help move the region towards our goal of greater economic diversification as it gradually brings 25,000 private-sector jobs to the area, substantially replacing those lost over the past two decades. Further, Amazon’s presence will attract additional companies, creating an innovation hub that will draw talent and provide enticing new employment opportunities for our recent graduates and existing workforce while stimulating investment in new and existing small businesses.
Amazon’s arrival will also accelerate the realization of the goals and expectations established through the County’s extensive planning efforts for the Crystal City area. Along with new development will come transportation infrastructure improvements and new amenities outlined in the Crystal City Sector Plan. Additionally, many critical transportation projects benefiting the area have now been directly funded by the Commonwealth, greatly accelerating their implementation and delivery of positive impacts on the community.
Amazon’s headquarters will strengthen our economy and promote success for our entire community. I encourage the County Board to approve the performance agreement for the Amazon headquarters to help secure Arlington’s economic future.
Sincerely,
