MAKE YOUR OPINIONS KNOWN!

COUNTY BOARD BUDGET AND TAX RATE HEARINGS

The Arlington County Board is in the middle of its budget process and now is the time for Chamber members to express their opinions to our elected officials.  The new County Budget takes effect on July 1, 2010, but will be adopted at the April 24, 2010 meeting of the County Board.

The Acting County Manager proposed a budget that includes an increase in the tax rate to 94.2 cents per $100 of assessed value.  This is an increase of 6.7 cents from the current rate of 87.5 cents.  The County Board advertised a tax rate of 96.5 cents per $100 of assessed value.  While there is significantly more involved in the proposed budget than just the tax rate, the rate advertised by the County Board represents an increase of over 10% from the current rate.  Detailed information on the proposed budget can be found at the following website.

The County Board will be holding public hearings on the budget on Tuesday, March 23, and Wednesday, March 24,at 7:00 p.m. in the County Board Hearing Room on the 3rd Floor of 2100 Clarendon Boulevard. The tax rate hearing will be held on Thursday, March, 25, also starting at 7:00p.m.rd Floor of 2100 Clarendon Boulevard. starting on the 3

Details on the meetings and instructions on how to register to speak can be found on the attached web site. You can sign up in advance to speak.

We strongly encourage Chamber members to participate in this process and make your opinions known.  Chamber members certainly have extensive experience in developing budgets in difficult financial times and undoubtedly have valuable insight to share with the members of the County Board.  In addition, you can be sure that advocates of all types of programs covered by the County budget will be present to make their opinions known.  Showing up and participating does matter!
