Legislative Update
General Assembly Opens
Strength through numbers is one of the basic tenets of your Chamber. Generally it implies that the more members we have, the stronger we are. But it also applies to our lobbying efforts. Now that the General Assembly has just opened for their 2010 session, we will be asked by like-minded organizations to partner on sponsoring a point of view or specific legislative initiatives.
The first of these this year comes from the Virginia Business Coalition on Workers' Compensation (BCWC), an initiative of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and a group to which our Chamber has belonged to for well over a decade. Click here to see the letter the Coalition has sent to The Honorable William J. Howell, Speaker of the House, regarding proposed legislation concerning workers' compensation matters. In addition to the letter, included are a roster of our fellow Coalition members, some background information on the group, and the Recommendations of the BCWC regarding specific positions we are taking.
Working to Protect Businesses in Court
The Arlington Chamber of Commerce has joined a coalition of Virginia organizations that are backing two new pieces of legislation recently introduced into the Virginia General Assembly. They are bills HB 309 and HB310 in the House of Delegates and SB 363 and SB366 in the Virginia Senate. The first calls for the use of depositions for summary judgment and the second would allow an offer of judgment process similar to the federal system. For a summary of both bills and a list of organizations that are supporting them, click here. For the actual language of the bills, click here for the summary judgment bill and click here for the offer of judgment bill.
To sign your company, client(s), or association on as a supporter of one or both of these bills click here.
