By Kate Bates, President & CEO, Arlington Chamber of Commerce Dear Arlington Chamber Members, The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our businesses and our broader community in significant ways, and we know that more is still to come. The Arlington Chamber is here to support you in any way we can. Public health during this time is top priority. As we adhere to social distancing guidelines, we are as prepared as ever to support our member businesses and the broader community. By Morgan Mentzer, Communications Coordinator, Arlington Chamber of Commerce The coronavirus has arrived in Arlington, with a local resident and a Crystal City worker testing positive for the disease. This spreading virus is having an impact not only on the health of those who contract the disease but also on the economy. The Chamber has heard concerns from a number of our members about the coronavirus and its potential impact on their personal and professional lives. As the situation continues to evolve, we want to provide tools and resources so our members can take preventative measures. We’ve compiled resources developed by Arlington County, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to provide businesses and their employees the necessary information they need to ensure a healthy workforce. By Ed Barry, Capital Bank With the advent of the digital age, one-on-one conversation is becoming a thing of the past. With it has gone the fine art of listening — one of the most valuable tools for any relationship, both business and personal, using emails as a substitute for really listening and gathering feedback. In fact, if you fail to listen to your clients, you fall short in understanding their needs. That, in turn, can put you out of business — fast. Why the deaf ear to clients? When you’re running a business, you’re busy — you have inventory, your books, and your employees, with product development always top of mind. You can become execution-minded and forget to take a step back and ask if you’re fulfilling the needs of your clients. What’s working and what isn’t, and why? What can make their jobs easier and their business more profitable? By Morgan Mentzer, Communications Coordinator, Arlington Chamber of Commerce The winter months are coming to an end, it’s time to travel somewhere warm and tropical! How does the Caribbean sound? Participate in the Chamber’s vacation raffle and you could win a trip to the award-winning Club Barbados Resort & Spa! By Sara Hartary, Hartary Consulting Every consultant wants to be viewed as a partner, not a vendor, and every client wants to feel like they matter to their service providers. Here are five ways to help facilitate great client-consultant partnerships that lead to repeat business, and relationships where both sides get back more than they put in. By Tad Lunger, Shulman Rogers As a benefit of the Chamber membership, we offer all members the opportunity to get more involved by joining a committee. The Chamber’s committees are a great way to broaden your network while learning about issues that impact your business and the community. There are a number of open committees to choose from, allowing you to select the committee that best suits your goals and interests. The Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee meets to advance ideas, policies, and legislation that strengthen businesses and the broader economic environment. Chamber members stay informed on emerging local, regional, and state public policy issues by interacting with the government officials who speak at committee meetings. To learn more about the Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee, we present the Co-Chair, Tad Lunger of Shulman Rogers. By Janet Kopenhaver, Embracing Arlington ArtsIt is a pretty well-known fact that arts and culture is immensely beneficial to a wide range of community sectors in Arlington. For example, it has been proven that students who have arts included in their school curriculum score higher on SATs and tests, and achieve higher GPAs. Also our nation’s Veterans suffering from PTSD greatly benefit from art therapy to help them adapt to civilian life. Seniors tend to stave off neurological diseases better, those suffering from physical disabilities and mental health challenges are better able to cope with their afflictions, and those recovering from illness heal faster – all due to the inclusion of arts and culture in their daily lives, and the list goes on and on. For more information on the numerous and diverse benefits arts and culture plays in our communities, states and nation, check out the “Social Impact Explorer Wheel." Alex Cooley, Northern Virginia Community CollegeThe "Northern Virginia IT Workforce Succession Planning Best Practices" report offers analysis and insight from in-depth interviews with C-suite executives who have knowledge of their company’s human resources practices. The qualitative data collected during these interviews provides the basis for this report, and builds upon the Greater Washington Technology Workforce Needs Assessment reports published by NVTC and NOVA in 2016 and 2018. |
