The latest version of WordPress is imminent and with it comes Gutenberg, and it’s going to change everything. Gutenberg is the codename for the new editing experience in WordPress, and it’s brand new. Unless you follow WordPress news closely, you might have missed what’s in store with this new change. The new Gutenberg editor looks kinda blank, but don’t be fooled. A lot of user interfaces are starting to simplify like this, but that doesn’t make them less complex. But, fear not, here are some tips and solutions to adapt to WordPress 5.0

By Kat Williams, Animal Welfare League of Arlington Animal lifesaving doesn’t begin and end at a shelter. Although shelter staff take pride in our work and love the animals in our care, our real goal is to help all animals stay in a loving and caring home. It’s kind of like how your dentist encourages you to brush and floss, all in the hope that you will not have to come in for a filling. By knowing and working within their communities, shelters can prevent at-risk animals from being brought in as strays, surrenders, or seizures. Helping pet owners with the little things, like behavior challenges, pet care items, and routine veterinary needs can prevent potential problems from escalating into big, expensive issues that result in pets being surrendered. By Hannah Dannenfelser, Community Involvement Ambassador, Arlington Community Federal Credit Union Businesses, especially Chamber businesses, know that community engagement is a key to success. Giving back to your community has proven ROI in staff recruitment and retention, organization reputation, and brand awareness. Business development and networking opportunities often emerge from being involved in the community, as well. Of particular relevance in our region – corporate social responsibility efforts are considered a “must” by the Millennial generation. By Linley Beckbridge, Communications and Outreach Manager, Doorways for Women and Families What do you do when trauma goes viral? Open a social media platform and you’re likely to see headlines about survivors, sexual assault, and strong opinions about both. Hashtags like #MeToo, #BelieveSurvivors and#WhyIDidntReport are shattering the silence that often shrouds sexual violence. While this can counteract the isolation so many victims and survivors feel, it can also be overwhelming and even triggering. Media coverage and subsequent on- and off-line conversations can also magnify the stigma that many people feel after experiencing abuse; victim-blaming and other myths about assault and trauma are often amplified alongside daily news stories. By Olivia McKay, Operations Coordinator, Arlington Chamber of Commerce I am originally from Pittsburgh, PA and traveled south to James Madison University, graduating in May 2018 with a degree in Marketing and Political Science. I decided to stay in Virginia and look for a place to call home in the DC area. In my search, I focused on finding a career path that would allow me the opportunity to have an impact on my community. I am thankful to have joined an organization that truly cares for the members and will go above and beyond to help anyone. That is my favorite thing about the Arlington Chamber of Commerce. Every person I interact with – whether that be my supportive colleagues or a member in need – has made me feel that I ended up at the right place. |
The mission of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce is to strengthen businesses and the economic environment for those who work, live and do business in Arlington.
